This guide walks you through the key interface elements and common interactions, so you can make the most out of your Planningboard.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
What you see on the screen
The Planningboard layout is split into two main sections:
Planningboard Area on the right: Cards are arranged into a grid of columns (Plans) and rows (swimlanes)
Unplanned Section on the left: Cards here are waiting to be assigned.
In the example shown, Iterations are displayed as columns and Assignees as swimlanes. However, you can adjust this according to your needs in the Widget Parameters; see more in this article.
The main interaction is the drag and drop function - move the cards from the Unplanned section to assign them to a specific Plan.
Note: Once cards with the status Verified are placed, they cannot be moved or unplanned.
Unplanned section
This section serves as a backlog for all cards that are not yet planned. You can filter these cards in several ways to suit your needs:
- By clicking the funnel icon, you can filter Work Items by assignee or team. If you have predefined Queries, you can enable them here also; see more on Queries in this article.
- By clicking the upper-right button, you can filter out Verified WIs:
- The option Filter columns hides Verified WIs that are already planned:
Cards = Work Items
Each card represents a Work Item. The content of the card is fully customizable. Check this link to see more: Customise the content of the card
When hovering over a card, three quick actions appear in the upper-right corner:
![]() | Show Links |
Displays all existing links between the selected card and others. All other cards will be hidden, leaving only the selected card and its linked cards:
![]() | Add Link |
Creates a link between the chosen card and another card. After clicking the icon, the same icon appears on all of the other cards. Click one to establish a connection.
- Red icon = a connection already exists (you can delete it if necessary)
As you see, we created one more link between cards, and now if we show links again, it will load something like this:
![]() | Unplan item |
Moves the selected card from the Planningboard back to the Unplanned section.
Toolbar
The toolbar in the upper-left corner provides several controls:
![]() | Collapse all swimlanes |
![]() | Expand all swimlanes |
![]() | Refresh data |
![]() | Toggle Resource Load visualization - shows the current load of each assignee in the swimlanes |
![]() | Show Unplanned - toggles the visibility of the Unplanned section |
![]() | Prioritize - enables the Prioritization feature. See more of this feature in this article. |
![]() | Show Dependencies - displays all links between cards (must be enabled using Widget Parameters) |
Collapse/Expand functions also work individually when clicking a single swimlane:
Unlike Show Links (card-level), Show Dependencies in the toolbar reveals all dependencies at once:
Plan capacity tooltip
By hovering over the capacity bar of a Plan, a detailed tooltip with capacity information appears. This feature is only available if you set it up through the Widget Parameters.
